Viking Winchlines – Synthetic Winch Rope

You'll never want to use steel cable on your winch again!

Viking-Winchlines

Creative Off-Road Designs is Authorized Dealer for Viking Winchlines.  Not only do I sell Viking Line, I have also been running it on both winches on my buggy for about two years now with no breakage, and some pretty hard use.

Here is some info from Viking Offroad about the advantages of using synthetic winchline over steel cable.  I have one or two of the popular sizes and options in stock.  I will have them on the upcoming online store.  Until then, call, e-mail, or use the Contact Us link to order or check prices…

Why switch from Steel Cable to Synthetic Winchlines? Safety, Strength, & Ease of Handling

Safety: Both steel and synthetic winchlines give a very small amount of stretch, the equivalent of less than 1% at breaking pressure. This tiny amount of stretch stores kinetic energy that is released when the line breaks. Since steel winchline is much heavier than synthetic winchline, the force of that stored energy is devastatingly powerful, particularly dangerous with people near. The synthetic line is so light and therefore stores less kinetic energy, which when released, the winchline virtually falls to the ground with a fraction of the force of steel. For this reason, 4×4 offroad racing sanctioning bodies do not allow steel cables because of their inherent danger. Synthetic winchlines are now mandatory.

Training: While synthetic winchlines are much safer, recovery operations are still dangerous and we encourage all winch owners with steel or synthetic winchlines to attend safety and training classes from certified trainers such as: Bill Burke, Tom Severin, Bruce Elfstrom, Garrett Porterfield and Overland Training. See I4WDTA for more information.

Ease of Handling: Steel winch cables have a tendency to kink, rust, and have very sharp strands once nicked. They also tend to straighten by the nature of the material making them harder to spool back on the winch properly. Our synthetic winchlines have none of these problems. However, synthetic lines are more susceptible to sharp edges (bumpers in particular) and heat, but they are much stronger, safer and easier to work with.

Strength: Dyneema® synthetic winchline fiber is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and 40% stronger than Aramid fibers on weight for weight basis. This means the replacement synthetic winchline is typically 35-45% stronger than steel cable! Steel cables are typically sized to match the strength of a winch. For example a 9,500 lb capacity winch will have roughly a 9,500-10,000 lb capacity steel cable. The replacement synthetic line would be 5/16″ (7.9mm) or 3/8″ (9.5mm). Our Viking Winchlines are rated at 12,300 lb (6 metric ton) for the 5/16″ and 17,600 lb (8 metric ton) for 3/8″, making them approximately 23% and 46% stronger on the conservative side.

A note about “rated” strength of recovery equipment for vehicles. There is no governing criteria to measure the strength of products used in vehicle recovery. Some products like hooks and shackles come from Overhead Lifting industry that has strict rules about strength measurements and safety factors. This is where WLL comes from. WLL is Working Load Limit. Typically a run of the mill Shackle for example will have a WLL of 4.75 US Ton with a 4:1 safety factor or approximately a 38,000 Lb. breaking strength. When it comes to the breaking strength of rope it becomes even more confusing. There are several methods by which rope is measured, and comparing these data is like comparing apples and oranges. In the past we have taken the widely accepted average breaking strength. However, Viking Offroad has taken a lead by leveling the field with a straight forward measurement: MBS or Minimum Breaking Strength. Now all measurements of strength of our products will live by these rules. Rated shackles will be posted in our literature with their MBS, rather than WLL, and all our ropes including winchlines will carry the same MBS rating. This will appear that our winchlines are not as strong as the advertised strenght of others. But in reality, you will not know the truth about other winchlines/ropes until true MBS is revealed. In addition, our winchlines are break tested with eyes, whereas some ropes are lab tested without eyes. It would do no good giving out a number that is lab tested without eyes. It’s not the real world, beacause you need eyes on your rope to connect it to a Tree Saver or another vehicle. Bottom line is AmSteel Blue is made from the strongest fiber available: Dyneema SK-75, and with a viking winchline you can be assured of the best quality US and European made goods. No imitations accepted.

Buyer Beware: There are variations of very strong synthetic ropes that we have seen on the market. These can include Amsteel rather than AmSteel-Blue (both can be blue and virtually indistinguishable) and Dyneema SK-60 available as well. Viking Offroad will never substitute synthetic ropes of lesser strength or quality. We always use genuine AmSteel-Blue™ (Viking Trail Line) for our winchlines.

Viking Winchlines© are Genuine AmSteel-Blue™ with Samthane™, a special coating to help resist abrasion. The raw material in AmSteel-Blue™ is made from Genuine Dyneema® SK-75 HMPE fiber, “which is the worlds strongest fiber™” made by DSM in the Netherlands.

Viking Trail Lines are used in many areas: Recreational four wheeling, racing, ATV’s, and towing industry. They are also used by the top trainers in the world including several military groups such as Navy Seals, Army Rangers and the Marines. Additional government agencies use our winchlines including Fire and Police Departments, US Forest Service, and California Coast Lifeguards.

Below are a couple of options when ordering your winchline…

Tube Thimble

Our Tube Thimble is made from tube steel and is powder coated. It is designed to be used with hooks but can be used with a shackle in lieu of a hook. The Tube Thimble is the strongest thimble designed for hooks.

Safety Thimble

The Safety Thimble is precision CNC machined from billet aluminum. It is designed to be connected by means of a shackle, as shown, rather than using hooks. This allows for the lightest and strongest winchline package

The Safety Thimble is designed to prevent the winch from accidentally sucking the thimble through the fairlead. This can severly damage hands and fairleads. The Safety Thimble can be snugged tightly against the fairlead, or to the side to a recovery point

Options for this line is a 3/4″ Shackle

> All Viking Winchlines come standard with a 8′ Ultra Heavy Duty Nylon tubular Rock Guard. Due to the stiffness of these new Rock Guards, they can not easly be replaced. If a replacement is needed, the winchline must be sent to us, and will be replaced for the cost of the guard <

Recovery Tow Ropes – Tow Straps
Appropriate Tow Ropes or Tow Straps are the most basic and essential recovery tool for any vehicle including all wheel drive such as a Subaru or even passenger cars used for exploration of the countryside.Tow Straps and Tow Ropes can only be used for Dynamic (Vehicle to Vehicle) recoveries. They should never be used with winches (static pull) due to the stretch they are designed to have to aid in a vehicle to vehicle dynamic pull. For this reason Viking Offroad and ARB distinguish the colors of the straps. Our Orange strap is for dynamic pulls, and our Green Strap is for static winching. These straps should not be mixed.WARNING: It is essential that kinetic tow straps/ropes be affixed to true recovery points that can withstand the force of one vehicle pulling or towing another.
Viking Tow / Snatch Straps2″ x 30′ – 17,500 Lb. MBS(50mm x 9m – 8mt MBS)

The Viking Tow Strap is the best quality strap made. It is 100% Made in the USA and features the Max Edge which is an anti abrasion edge to protect the strap. Edges are the highest wear area of straps.

The Viking Straps also features some of the strongest stitching available with extremely tough eye guards to protect the business end of the straps. The eye size is also key to strength, these straps have some of the largest eyes of any straps which reduces the angular loading thus increasing the strength.

2/2″ x 30′ – 35,000 Lb. MBS (Double Two Inch)
(2/50mm x 9m – 16mt MBS)
The 35,000 Lb. strap is two layers of the above mentioned 2″ strap sewn together. This strap is easier to manage in this configuration over a 4″ strap, but provides the same high strength.
Viking Kinetic Recovery Tow RopesWhy Choose a Viking Kinetic Recovery Tow Rope over a strap? The Viking Tow Ropes stretch 30% at breaking point which makes them more effective than straps. The high degree of stretch makes the Recovery Ropes extremely effective. The point of a Recovery Rope or Snatch Strap is to provide stretch in a dynamic pull (opposite is true for winchlines in a static pull). The more stretch the more kinetic energy is built up to help move the vehicle, and the less impact on the vehicle itself. Viking Kinetic Recovery Tow Ropes are made from 100% Premium DuPont™ Nylon Double Braid. Our ropes are dyed black to minimize discoloration when dirty and to maintain better visibility when used in snow and sand. Eyes are protected with heavy duty nylon guards with strength identofied. All our ropes are 100% US made: both fiber and assembly. When choosing a Tow Rope size, plan the breaking strength to be approximately 3 times the weight of your vehicle. For larger vehicles this number is closer to the weight of the vehicle.SAFETY NOTE: Do not use Tow Ropes or Tow Straps (kinetic snatch straps etc.) with winches. Never connect ropes / straps end to end with other kinetic ropes / straps with shackles or metal connectors.
1/2” x 15′, 7,400 lb. / (3.4 metric ton) MBS1/2″ Rope is only recommended for very light weight vehicles such as all wheel drive Subaru cars etc.
3/4″ x 30′, 19,000 lb. / (8.6 metric ton) MBS 3/4″ supports most recreational 4×4′s such as Jeeps, Land Rovers, Toyotas, Mercedes G etc.
1″ x 30′, 33,500 lb. / (15.2 metric ton) MBSRecovery Ropes are reserved for Sportsmobiles, Heavy expedition vehicles, Military Hummvees, full size pickups etc.
1-1/4″ x 30′, 52,300 lb. / (23.7metric ton) MBS 1/4″ Recovery Ropes are for heavy motorhomes / coaches, buses, dump trucks, military MRAP’s etc.
1-1/2″ x 30′ , 74,000 lb. / (33.5 metric ton) MBS – $319.42PN: 1004341-1/2″ Ropes are for full size semi trucks
